On the Road Again: Western Honshu.

This time,
Esther took us for a spin North.
To be precisely, to the western part of Honshu.

We left Alishan at 4 AM, to beat the Traffic.
Only a few hours later we were cruising
the Highways near Hiroshima and...
See the crowd?

Hmm, White Fluffy Stuff ...
..that was maybe the reason why the traffic was far and few.
Lucky for us, the roads were snow-free:
Esther doesn't have any snow-shoes...

First thing on the list-to-explore...
See that railway bridge?

These duckies gather there.
The local birding group made a nice hidy-ho to observe the
Oshidori. A few wonderful photography hours were had.

BUT...we had to come back the next morning at 7AM
So we did and so did other birders.
(inside the hide-out under the railway bridge).

HUNDREDS!!
For more detailed pictures,
of course you'll have to zoeff to Marijke's

But there was more to see in this part of Honshu.

 Matsue Castle.

And The Spoon at Izumo Temple.

Don't ask me the details, but at most temples in Japan,
you'll find  a Cow.
A Cow made of bronze.
And with bronze..it turns dull and green due to O2 and water.
But always, parts of these cows are shining.
Why?
Because rubbing these body-parts...will bring good health to yourself!!
So rub the cow and wash your hands.

BTW, Izumo is the Temple of All the Gods,
and it has to do with Towing the Land.

Some more sightseeing in the neighbourhood.

After a night with +++ rain, an early morning visit
to the Izumo temples made great photo shooting.

As usual, we cramp inside Esther
(and sleep the Best of Sleeps).
One night thou, we opted to stay in a traditional ryokan.
Resulting in this Power Breakfast.

Oops, one more.
The famous temple at Tsuwano.
First time we visited this place was 25 years ago....
so we were due.

Driving south again during a rainy day we explored this awesome gorge. Definite a return-item on the list.
Marijke all excited, as even here some oshidori ducks were spotted.

Last stop was at Tsunoshima's Lighthouse.
Yes, we like mountains, temples, forests, rivers...
but somehow we always have to come back to sea-level.
That was a nice drive.
(added 1200 K to the clock).

Salute.

Spring is in the Air.

What a relief after a cold, windy and snowy week:
The weather looked promising for the day.
So we loaded our backpacks and jumped on board the 7 AM
Itoshima Express, heading for Fukuyoshi station.
From there to follow the trail Up and Down 4 Peaks.

Blue blue sky and Plum Blossom.

Peak # 2.

All smiles at the Sunny Side of the Hill.
(yep, we did see the odd snow pocket in shady corners)

It's not only Climb and Run.
Somehow this small lunch popped out of our backpacks.
...of course there were complains about the forgotten bottle of wine.

On Top of the World at the last peak of the day.

Itoshima down there.

8 hours later we were back at sea-level.
Yeap, these are edible.
A very popular veggie, of course one reason is:
Spring is Here!

Right now we see dolls like these All over Town.
Soon it's Hina Matsuri, aka Girls Festival.
(3 March).

For sure that calendar day starts Spring.

Salute.

Making YouTubies @ wintery days.

With so many cold days around what
else to do than doing some video editing?
See here a slide-tuby starring SHOGUN.

And an other one,
about the Val Maremola Trail 2016
run with Hashimoto san in February.

That's it for now,
have to refill the heather...

Ciao for Now.

Our yearly trip to Ibusuki

The second Sunday in January is always
Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon Day.
Now for the fifth time, Esther the Car drove us there for this event ..
with of course: Sight Seeing and Birdwatching on the side.

Sunrise over Kagoshima Bay.
Those hills across the pond are in Miyasaki.

Happy Man enjoying the Good Weather.

Yamakawa toilet building.
Talking about toilets...the day before the marathon a bug found my belly and so,
i had to spend a few very uncomfy hours "On the Throne".
(for your interest, not this particular one).
All okay at the end but i didn't feel well enough for the 42K, hence i joined Marijke with Cheering the Runners.....

....and some sightseeing along the race course..

And here comes Yuki Kawauchi.
Bib # 1 is leading the field of 18.000 runners.

Including friends:

Ishii san...

Shimizu san...

Ohara san...

and Noriko san.

The next day we drove Esther on board of the ferry for the short trip across
Kagoshima Bay to explore that part of the peninsula.
Including the most southerly lighthouse on Kyushu Island.
 Sata Point.

This part of Kyushu is by times a Typhoon Alley.
Seen at a building site along the road:
Wind forecast for Engineers.

Too bad our day was a very rainy day, but we still enjoyed the drive. Narrowly avoiding hitting wild pigs and monkeys crossing our roads.
In the dark hours we ended up at a smallish fishing port where,  to our surprise, the next morning, we found these dressed-up floats...
ready for the start of the New Year Fishing Season.

At the fish-market.

Never get tired of looking at these kind of (fishing) boats.
This is a long-liner. With usually 5 crew on board.

That was an other 5 day fun trip with Esther the Car.
She drove us comfortable 1100 K and boy,
did we sleep well.

Salute.

Play with Fire at Usa city

Again we jumped on board of Esther the Car and drove to the other side of Kyushu.
This time it was Oni-E matsuri.
Exciting and hot.
But would luff to see it one day with a fresh coat of snow on the fields and riverbanks.
Click on the picture to see the action.
